What is the Lions biggest need in the 2011 Draft? The biggest holes are in the secondary, depth at LB and DE. A highly skilled OT would be nice as well, since Backus' consecutive game streak could end at any time. The Lions need playmakers and they need them immediately. Will a rookie DB, LB or DE really be able to step in and have a Ndamukong Suh like impact? It's possible, but not likely. Who are the top free agents in 2011?? CB Namdi Asomugha, LB/DE LaMaar Woodley, LB Tamba Hali, LB Chad Greenway, and CB Antonio Cromartie. The NFL is a business right? If you are going to pay a guy first round money, why not not get a known commodity?
Now I'm not saying it is easy to trade first round picks because they are expensive, but if we can trade down in the first round multiple times from 13 to 16, 16 to 21, 21 to 25 etc. we will rack up later round picks and save ourselves some money. I say have this plan in place and attack the free agent market. Go get a guy who can help your team NOW. Go pay that first round money to Asomugha or Woodley and instantly improve your defense. Bringing a guy like Woodley back to his home state would be fantastic and fans would rejoice.
The NFL is a business and it is time the Lions start treating it like one.
Well, we just got our 7th round pick stripped and got moved back in the 5th thanks to "tampering"...whateverthefuck that means...
ReplyDeleteAnd Pitt just franchised Woodley...I don't think he is going anywhere, but I do love that thought...our D-line would be one to reckon with if he was in Detroit.
ReplyDeleteNnamdi is going to stay in Oakland... They hired rod woodson to ensure that, woodley is franchised, cromartie is a fucking cancer, greenway is injury prone, and I'd be shocked if Hali moved. Trading down is a good idea (as I mentioned in my draft highlight article) however, these players simply have 0 chance of becoming lions.
ReplyDeleteI would continue to build through the draft given the uncertainty of the CBA. Going forward, the draft will be an excellent way to build a team once the owners get their desired NBA type rookie wage salary scale. Second round picks have a much higher return on investment than the first round picks(mostly due to the huge drop-off in bonuses and salaries), and I feel like if we don't like anyone at our current spot, we should trade down and try to see if someone really wants to give up a 2 or a 3. You can find players in those rounds that can come in and help your team. You become an elite team in the league by having your 2nd-4th round guys contribute.
ReplyDeleteI obviously did not do my homework on those specific guys. I just think getting a top flight free agent is a good idea when you are on the cusp of being a contender. Rather have an immediate contributor than a question mark, however, if everyone worthwhile is unavailable that changes things.
