"The National Anthem"
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
This is our national anthem, the song that precedes most, if not all, important sporting events in high school gymnasiums all the way thru max capacity sporting arenas. The roots of this song are not embedded in American history, in fact the song stems from an English drinking song, and then remixed like your latest hip-hop masterpiece. This is only fitting given the events that transpired this past Sunday prior to the start of the Super Bowl. Taking the song back to its original heritage of over indulgers stumbling around hitting three of four lyrics as they watch the latest Association football ( Soccer) match, Miss Aguilera thought it was in her best interest to imbibe a few celebratory cocktails prior to singing, what most consider, the most patriotic song in America. Unfortunately, this was not a slip up at your local pub resulting from a few too many glasses of Port. This was the grandest stage in all of America, for Christ sake it was in Dallas of all places. I am surprised that no one caught this until the Monday morning press got a hold of it. I can honestly say that I was watching the entire thing unfold and I did not catch the slip up. So who should be taken behind the pub for a good old fashion donney brooke. Christina? Or the countless number of fans that missed the words honoring those who died for their cheese filled pretzels?
While you marinate on that, think of the lyrics of My Country ‘tis of The, or The Pledge of Allegiance. Can you remember all the lyrics? Can to revert back to elementary school where you recited this at nauseam? How about the Big Mac song?
Two all beef patties
special sauce
lettuce
cheese
pickles
onions
on a sesame seed bun
Pretty scary isn’t it.
Go ahead and peak at the real anthem, as the one posted prior was the mistake that CA made on Sunday. Did you catch it? Or did you senselessly pass over it as you do most times when it is sang before the game.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we HAILED at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
I charge you with this. Instead of burning those who mess up the lyrics on a cross, challenge yourself to embrace what the song means to you and those who we sing it for. You might find that you begin to sway like the players on the sideline, or moved to tears like some in the stands. However, if you don’t feel anything at all and piss and moan about having to take your kangaroo cap off do not be surprised if you find yourself bobbing in Boston Harbor next time you cross paths with the many that take this adopted drinking song as their own. Cheers.
